Barnabas Tew might very well be the worst detective that ever lived, but he doesn’t know it. His case record is bad, and his luck is even worse. Somehow, though, he manages to attract the attention of Anubis, the god of the dead, who needs a detective and decides that Barnabas is the only one that will do. Anubis gets what Anubis wants, so he takes Barnabas, along with his assistant, Wilfred, into the afterlife, and sets them to work.
They have no choice but to do as Anubis wants, but success comes at a price. Happy with their results, Anubis recommends them to his godly friends, and soon Barnabas and Wilfred find themselves being passed from one afterlife to another at the whim of gods who do not care whether they live or die.
Can they break the cycle? Or will they always be puppets for the gods?
