Their captain, Silas, survives on a pneumatic heart the Ministry can stop at will. Garrick carries his daughter’s broken music box. Tess calculates their chances of coming home. Pip jokes when those chances get worse. Keeping them alive matters more to Silas than following orders.

When they uncover plans to poison the forests, the crew turns to the people they were sent to fight. The Root could free them from the Ministry’s control, but accepting its help will change their bodies forever.
