Nick counts people. It’s been ten years since the virus started paring down the human race. Every summer, like an early flu season, it comes back. Nick travels looking for communities to barter with and counts the survivors.
On one such trip, he finds the body of a young woman who had been shot. When every person left alive is essential for the survival of humankind, a murder becomes especially heinous. Nick discovers that the girl’s younger siblings are in danger, too.
The safety he enjoys at High Meadow med center is threatened. The changed world that he’d finally come to accept turns out to harbor more secrets and lies. With the help of a biobot and stolen weapons, he must track down the children before the mercenaries find them. Even if it brings them right back to his doorstep.
