In The Land Of My Enemy by Jon H Thompson

After a poacher is killed in the dense wilderness high above the isolated West Virginia mountain town of Mitchelville, Sheriff Harlan “Red” Roosevelt is stuck trying investigate the odd fact the man had been killed with what looks like a flint-headed spear.

Calling for help on the town doctor and an old friend who teaches anthropology they discover something unknown is living high up among the impenetrable heights above the town.
